Autism Explained

Could Your Child Have Autism?

When Can Autism Be Diagnosed?

Autism is mainly diagnosed at 18 months of age. However, there have been cases when children have shown signs of autism before 18 months of age, though this is uncommon. All babies develop at their own pace and you cannot rush them. By 18 months of age it is possible to see if your child has developed slower than most and this is when Autism can be diagnosed. It is always best to seek medical advice as soon as possible.

If you are worried about your child not developing properly, the following signs may point towards Autism:

* If your baby doesn’t coo or make babbling noises by the age of 12 months old

* If your baby doesn’t speak at all by the age of 16 months

* Doesn’t make any movements such as pointing and waving by the age of 12 months

* Doesn’t seem to remember previous language or social skills at any age

A child with suspected Autism needs to be checked every so often. The doctor will look for signs of development and will work with a team of professionals to make a formal diagnosis. Due to the fact that there are different severity levels of the disorder, making a diagnosis can be difficult and diagnosis is generally made through observing the child and asking you about their development skills at home.

Even though the diagnosis can be made at 18 months of age, most parents find that their children aren’t given a proper diagnosis until they are around 2-3 years of age. This is because it is easier to tell at this age what degree of autism the child has and what their development skills are. It is essential that you give your child the chance of an early diagnosis as it can really help the child in the future through various intervention programs.
