There are ways that you can help your child when you are given a formal diagnosis of Autism.
In the beginning stages, you can try to form a close, warm and playful bond with your child. This enforces social interaction and shows the child that there is nothing to fear from getting close to someone. This positive step so early on will help to cut out any power struggles you may have over time. Get to know what your child likes and what they do not like. Help your child learn that if they do as they are told and if they cooperate, they will be rewarded. Behavior they will need to learn includes sitting and paying attention. This is essential for when they finally go to school.
The middle stages of therapy include learning very specific interactions such as play, social skills and self-help. The aim of this stage is to increase your child’s ability to function and learn in natural settings. Take your child to play dates and other community settings. Children going through the middle stages of therapy also tend to start school around this time.
The later stages of therapy include focusing more on every day communication in a subtle way. More subtle social and play skills are learned and integration into natural learning environments such as school comes during this stage.
