What is Autism and High Functioning Autism?

Even as prevalent as the ailment is, many people may be wondering just exactly what is autism, also known as autistic spectrum disorder, also known as high functioning autism. Unfortunately, there is not a general "one size fits all" answer to this question since this is a complex disease with varying degrees of severity, and even characteristics and symptoms can vary slightly from person to person.
